On the Syntax of Multiple Sluicing and What It Tells Us about Wh-Scope Taking

چکیده

Across many languages, multiple sluicing obeys a clausemate constraint. This can be understood on the empirically well-supported assumption that covert phrasal wh-movement is clause-bounded and subject to Superiority. We provide independent evidence for syntactic structure at ellipsis site locality constraints movement operations within site. Ebola: what it tells us about medical ethics.

Good medical ethics needs to look more to the resources of public health ethics and use more societal, population or community values and perspectives, rather than defaulting to the individualistic values that currently dominate discussion. In this paper I argue that we can use the recent response to Ebola as an example of a major failure of the global community in three ways. First, the focus ...

Neuroimaging of schizophrenia: what it reveals about the disease and what it tells us about a patient.

Neuroimaging in psychiatry, and in schizophrenia in particular, moves ahead at a rapid pace delivering new insights into the nature of the illness and its intriguing symptoms via technologies such as MRI, fMRI, PET, and SPET scanning. How do these impact on understanding the patient in front of us? What do they mean for the busy clinician in clinic? We outline some of the recent findings in neu...

What Humour Tells Us About Discourse Theories

Many verbal jokes, like garden path sentences, pose difficulties to models of discourse since the initially primed interpretation needs to be discarded and a new one created based on subsequent statements. The effect of the joke depends on the fact that the second (correct) interpretation was not visible earlier. Existing models of discourse semantics in principle generate all interpretations o...

The Shape of an Auxin Pulse, and What It Tells Us about the Transport Mechanism

Auxin underlies many processes in plant development and physiology, and this makes it of prime importance to understand its movements through plant tissues. In stems and coleoptiles, classic experiments showed that the peak region of a pulse of radio-labelled auxin moves at a roughly constant velocity down a stem or coleoptile segment. As the pulse moves it becomes broader, at a roughly constan...
